The Hunt Begins!

Beginning May 19, 2026, visitors and residents alike will have a new reason to wander the streets of Abingdon. The Abingdon Wolf Project, a partnership between the William King Museum of Art, Visit Abingdon, and the Town of Abingdon, transforms the community into an interactive outdoor art experience that celebrates the town’s history, creativity, and unique sense of place.

Inspired by Abingdon’s original name, Wolf Hills, the project features a collection of larger-than-life fiberglass wolf sculptures installed throughout town. Each wolf has been uniquely designed by local and regional artists selected through a juried process, creating a vibrant open-air gallery that showcases the artistic talent and cultural spirit of Southwest Virginia.

Visitors can participate through a free mobile passport powered by Bandwango, guiding them to each wolf location while unlocking exclusive digital content along the way. At every stop, participants can learn more about the artist, discover the inspiration behind each design, and explore stories that connect the artwork to Abingdon’s rich heritage. As travelers complete locations on the trail, they can earn points toward prizes while experiencing the charm of Abingdon’s walkable downtown, local businesses, historic sites, and scenic corners.

For Visit Abingdon, the Wolf Project represents more than a public art installation—it is an invitation to experience the destination in a new way. The self-guided trail encourages exploration, supports local businesses, and creates memorable opportunities for visitors to engage with the community through art and storytelling.

“The Abingdon Wolf Project is a celebration of who we are—our history, our creativity, and our sense of place,” said Mandy Barker. “By combining public art with interactive technology, we’re creating an experience that invites people to explore, engage, and connect with Abingdon in a meaningful way.”

The wolves will remain on display throughout the season before being auctioned during the annual Mistletoe Market Gala on November 7, 2026. Proceeds from the auction will benefit the William King Museum of Art and help support the artists whose creativity brought each sculpture to life.

Whether you are visiting Abingdon for the first time or rediscovering your hometown, the Abingdon Wolf Project offers a fun and meaningful way to experience the place where art, history, and community come together. Keep your eyes open—the wolves are waiting.

Visit each wolf location and earn a total of 250 points. Visit the front desk at WKMA and show your points total to claim your prize: a poster of this year’s wolves and a one-year membership to WKMA.
