Core summer memories were made on Saturday, July 4, 2026, as thousands of residents and visitors gathered at the Meadows Sports Complex to celebrate 250 years of America during Abingdon’s Independence Day Celebration.

The festivities began with the sounds of DJ Big Lon, who set the perfect tone for the evening by spinning an outstanding collection of local soul records while families explored the celebration. The Abingdon Rotary Club’s splash pad was in full effect, providing a welcome way to cool off on a warm summer evening and quickly became one of the most popular attractions for children.

The Veterans Advisory Board kept the fun going with cornhole, noodle fights, and family-friendly activities that brought together visitors of all ages. Throughout the evening, towering Uncle Sam delighted guests, while Mayor Dwyane Anderson led the bike parade in the brand-new Mayor Mobile, spreading smiles and hometown spirit.

Patriotic pride was on full display as children and families decorated their bicycles for the annual Bike Parade, making their way down the path led by the stirring sounds of a Drum & Fife corps.

As the sun began to set, the beach party came alive. Guests danced barefoot in the sand, embraced the summer heat, and celebrated as The Mighty Tams took the stage. With over 50 years of The Tams, the legendary group proved that mighty was exactly the right word, delivering an energetic performance that had the crowd singing and dancing all night long.

Dark clouds threatened to interrupt the festivities, but the thunder and lightning held off until the grand finale. Following a moving patriotic tribute, the skies above Veterans Memorial Park erupted into a spectacular fireworks display, bringing a memorable close to an evening celebrating our nation’s 250th birthday.

The Town of Abingdon extends a heartfelt thank you to the  Eclipse Entertainment Group , Just for Fun Party Rentals, Virginia Highlands Festival, Dutt & Wagner, Comfort Suites Abingdon, public works, public safety personnel, parks staff, and everyone who helped make this celebration possible. Their dedication created an evening filled with community pride, lasting memories, and a celebration worthy of this historic milestone.

Thank you to everyone who danced with us in the sand, braved the summer heat, and helped make this year’s Abingdon Independence Day Celebration honoring VA250 one we won’t soon forget.
