Barter at Christmas: 5 Unexpected Delights
The artsy mountain town of Abingdon, VA is known for its Christmas charm, and there’s one attraction that’s particularly delightful during the holidays. At Barter Theatre during this festive season, patrons can expect elaborate, gorgeous decorations throughout the common areas, hot cocoa at intermission, and a troupe of skilled performers to rival Broadway.
We’ve compiled a list of five unexpectedly delightful things about Barter at the holidays.
1. There's something for everyone
Barter Theatre’s holiday lineup includes not one, not two, but FOUR holiday productions, ranging from naughty to nice.
Families will appreciate the lavish musical production of Irving Berlin’s White Christmas and ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, while adults will enjoy the thought-provoking story of redemption in Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol. For those who like their holidays a little more naughty than nice, The Santaland Diaries is a no-holds-barred confession of a department store elf.
White Christmas is a timeless tale of joy and goodwill filled with Irving Berlin’s songs, topped off with glorious dancing and lots of snow! Bob and Phil are two showbiz buddies putting on a production in a picturesque Vermont Inn after World War II. In the bargain, these two meet their perfect mates, who happen to be sisters, and honor their beloved army general. It's a show full of romance, laughter and some of the greatest songs ever written, including “Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep,” “Happy Holiday,” “Sisters,” “Blue Skies,” “Snow,” “The Best Things Happen While You’re Dancing,” and the unforgettable title song, Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas.”

We all know how easy it is to get caught up in the bustle of the holidays, while losing sight of the importance of quality time with our loved once. When you take in a Christmas show at Barter Theatre, you'll make holiday memories that you'll treasure forever.

5. Make Memories
Long after toys break and clothes are outgrown, kids will remember the special magic of a Christmas trip to Abingdon to see a show at Barter Theatre. Make special memories with a Barter experience that can be equally enjoyed by children, parents, and grandparents.
"I decided this year, in lieu of gifts, I would treat my son and his family to a trip to the Barter. Everything was decorated for the holidays and we were escorted to our seats. We reserved seats in the center of the orchestra section but all seats are equally good to see the stage. The play was excellent. The actors, stage settings and costumes superb. Part of my enjoyment was watching my seven year old grandson leaning forward in his seat so he wouldn't miss anything and I saw my fifteen year old granddaughter wipe away a tear during a sad moment. Over dinner, we were still discussing the play. So yes, this was so much better than gifts or you could say it was "the gift that keeps on giving". - Linda E., Trip Advisor
