Grayson Highlands State Park was definitely the highlight of our trip and has easily earned a place among my top three Virginia state parks so far. We hiked through the park and into the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, continuing all the way to the summit of Mount Rogers. The hike was very manageable, and I would agree with its moderate rating. It was long enough to feel rewarding without being overly difficult. The scenery was incredible throughout the entire hike. We saw the wild ponies up close, including several foals, which was easily one of the most memorable parts of the day. Wild blueberries and blackberries were growing all along the way and added even more character to an already beautiful landscape. Between the mountain views, wild ponies, berries, and enjoyable trail, this was an unforgettable experience. Grayson Highlands is an exceptional park and somewhere we would gladly return to.

Definitely one of the better state parks Virginia has to offer. It was awe inspiring going in the winter. Walking through the clouds in the ice and snow was truly unforgettable. The wild ponies were fun to see as well. They're super people friendly, clearly people have been ignoring the signs and feeding them haha. To enter Grayson Highlands State Park, you need to pay a $10 fee. We arrived around 7:30 AM, and since no one was at the entrance gate, we had to use the honor-system envelope. We didn’t have $10 in cash, so we ended up putting in $20 instead. Definitely take cash with you. The visitor center was also not open at that time, which was a little irritating. We parked at Massie Gap, which can fill up quickly, and did a few trails from there, including Rhododendron Trail, Horse Trail North, and Wilburn Ridge. The views were great. Unfortunately, we were one of the unlucky groups that never got to see the ponies. We did meet several people on the trail who had seen them, though, so we’ll definitely have to come back and try again.

Gorgeous! We were only able to do the Massey Gap Trailhead during our short visit with our toddler. We got lucky and saw a mama horse with her baby while on the trail and then 2 cows in the distance. Would love to come back and explore more! Also pro tip...park at the bottom lot of vistor center to walk up stairs because there are only handicap spots up top and you'll have to come back around which is no big deal but wish it was marked that way. No changing table at vistor center to change baby just fyi.

Beautiful park!! Lots of different hiking trails with different views-some with wild horses. Wonderful visitor’s center with restrooms and a shop (some souvenirs were high end/pricey but hand made/high quality)
