An Old-Fashioned White Christmas

 

It’s going to be a white Christmas in Abingdon this season, regardless of the weather forecast. Beginning Friday November 17, Abingdon celebrates An Old-Fashioned White Christmas, a month of family-friendly holiday activities.

Christmas Carolers on Main Street

Every weekend, Abingdon’s quaint downtown will be transformed in to a Christmas wonderland, with carolers, magical storefront displays, the scent of roasted chestnuts on the air and special events to celebrate the season. There will be plenty of opportunities to find the perfect gift, as Abingdon’s merchants will stay open late each weekend to accommodate shoppers.

 

Barter Theatre’s Holiday Offerings

The holiday season in Abingdon kicks off Friday November 17th with the opening of Barter Theatre’s classic musical White Christmas.

Barter is a holiday tradition for many families in the region, and this year’s offering is a lavish production of the beloved Christmas movie. It’s a timeless tale of joy and goodwill filled with Irving Berlin’s best songs, topped off with glorious dancing and lots of snow, making this a show a holiday classic for all audiences. The fun continues with “Rudolph,” a holiday story for young audiences, and the hilarious comedies “A Tuna Christmas,” and “The Santaland Diaries,” (better suited for adults).

Shopping in a Winter Wonderland

Abingdon is known for its charming mom-and-pop stores, which offer unique gifts you won’t find in the mall.  This holiday season, Abingdon’s merchants invite families to spend the entire day in Abingdon.

Bring the family to Barter Theatre for a holiday show, then browse the storefront displays downtown.  Grab a bite at one of Abingdon’s locally owned restaurants, and enjoy the festive decorations downtown.  You might even run in to Santa while in town!

The Abingdon Farmers Market will be open each Saturday morning with baked goods, crafts and gifts.  Abingdon’s merchants will compete for the best store window, with “White Christmas” themed displays.

Abingdon Merchants’ Holiday Open House

Sunday November 19th, 1pm to 6pm

Kick off the holiday season with a town-wide open house, hosted by Abingdon’s merchants. Abingdon is charming all year long, but the town really shines at Christmas. New this year, Abingdon’s businesses will compete for the most over-the-top window display, inspired by Barter Theatre’s “White Christmas.”

The extended shopping hours (1pm to 6pm) will help you get a jump start on your holiday shopping.  While you’re browsing Abingdon’s unique independent stores, enjoy a free holiday concert.

Abingdon Baptist Church’s choir will lead a Christmas sing-along at Main Street Park 1pm to 2pm – free!

The VHCC Women’s Choir will perform holiday favorites at Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church, 2pm to 3pm.

 

Small Business Saturday

Saturday November 25th, 11am to 7pm

Skip the Black Friday madness, and head to downtown Abingdon for Small Business Saturday.  This national campaign was originally created by American Express to encourage shoppers to support small businesses.

Abingdon will celebrate Small Business Saturday with free family activities, extended merchant hours, and freshly roasted chestnuts for sale on Main Street.  Stroll along the adorable brick sidewalks and enjoy the window displays: this year Abingdon’s merchants will compete for the most over-the-top window display, inspired by Barter Theatre’s “White Christmas.”

Merchants will open their doors for extended hours, 11am to 7pm, to make holiday shopping easier. From antiques to specialty sweets, ladies apparel, jewelry, art galleries, home décor. Christmas ornaments, toys and much more, Abingdon’s independent retailers have gifts at any price point.

Roasted chestnuts will be on sale at Main Street Town Park (between Wall St. and Russell Road) starting at 11am until supplies run out. All proceeds benefit the American Chestnut Foundation.

The cast of Barter Theatre’s “Rudolph” will be caroling 11am to 1pm on West Main Street. block between Cummings and Russell Road.

Christmas Activities for Families

The lighting of the Abingdon Christmas Tree December 1st, and the Abingdon Christmas parade December 2nd are beloved family traditions, but this year Abingdon has added even more holiday fun, with activities every weekend (and some weeknights).

Taste freshly roasted chestnuts from The American Chestnut Foundation. Join in to sing your favorite holiday carols with a free sing-along at Town Park on Main Street. Have breakfast with Santa at Heartwood. Create a Christmas craft with the Elves Workshop at William King Museum of Art.

Make the holidays extra special for your little ones this year with a personal letter from the big guy at the North Pole.  Write your letter to Santa, and drop it in Santa’s Mailbox, located at 272 W. Main Street in downtown Abingdon.  You’ll receive a personalized response from Santa, postmarked from the North Pole.

Letters must be dropped off between November 15 and December 10, and must include a name and full return address.   Sponsored by the Town of Abingdon.

“White Christmas” opens at Barter Theatre with a Pay What You Can Night at 8:00pm – tickets for as little as $1.00. Runs through December 30th.
