Coal Country Opening Reception: February 1, 2018 from 6 – 8 p.m. February 1 – August 12, 2018 Many towns in the southern Appalachian region were built on the back of coal. Generations of miners tunneled their way into the mountainsides of Appalachia, digging ever deeper in search of those rich seams of shining black running through the rock. Wherever those deposits were found, communities sprang up around them, built by the companies that owned the mines. These company towns, or coal camps, were entirely self-sufficient, complete with company houses, company stores, hospitals, churches, dance halls, even marching bands and baseball teams. Coal Country examines the rich history and culture of coal in Southwest Virginia through the stories of the coal companies, the mines and towns they built, and the people who called those towns home.   Coal Country is sponsored by Penn Stuart Attorneys at Law

Touching the Sacred Opening Reception: April 5, 2018 from 6 – 8 p.m. March 30 – September 16, 2018 Special Lecture: Tours at Two - Guided Tour of Touching the Sacred with Mary Haviland April 8 beginning at 2 p.m. Inspired by faith, the holy imagery has long been a part of many religions. These gloriously creative representations of the stories and holy beings began as a teaching device for the believers, many of whom were unable to read. Touching the Sacred focuses on imagery from two branches of Christianity – the Orthodox and the Catholic traditions and how the depictions developed by each are similar and how they differ. These depictions range from paintings of saints, angels, and the Holy Family on canvas, wood, bronze, and tin panels, to carvings of them completely in wood or with modeled heads and hands and cloth bodies which were sumptuously clothed. Over the centuries, these venerated representations of holiness have evolved from teaching tools into a sacred art form.

A heart-warming portrait of friendship and love is the basis for this much-loved show. There isn’t a bond quite like the one between southern women in a beauty shop. In a small southern town, six women gather in Truvy’s Beauty Salon to share gossip, laughter, recipes and beauty secrets, but they end up sharing so much more. Humor and heartbreak shine through this performance as the women experience some of the most significant days of their lives together. The true power of friendship shows through the women's underlying strength, which makes these characters genuinely touching, funny, and marvelously amiable company in the good times and bad.

By Ross Carter It’s l’amour, y’all! Country music meets opera in the most unlikely, unbelievable and undoubtedly the most popular play to ever come through Barter’s Appalachian Festival of Plays and Playwrights. A struggling opera singer has a dream: to sing the lead in Carmen. Her agent thinks she’s found the answer! But she finds herself singing at a state fair with a country music band called the Car Men —agents clash, people panic, and the singers erupt at the worst of possible moments in one of the funniest musicals you will ever experience.

LIVING HISTORY TOUR of Sinking Spring Cemetery July 28 (Saturday)    5:00 – 7:15 pm Presented by The Historical Society of Washington County, VA. Join us for a walk through history as guides lead visitors through this picturesque burial ground while interpreters in period costume stand at the graveside and tell the story of the person lying in rest. Each tour lasts about an hour and the last one will begin at 7:15 pm. The tour is appropriate for families; however very small children may become tired or bored. There is nothing scary about the presentations or the location. The ground is uneven, so we recommend comfortable shoes. Free parking available in the Society's lot, corner of 341 W. Main St. and Russell Road.

    Show details

    Locality:
    Washington
    110 West Main Street
    Abingdon, VA 24210

By Alice Stanley In the midst of the first gruesomely violent event of the legendary Hatfield and McCoy feud, one woman does what she must to save her family. Sally McCoy tells a harrowing and deeply personal story which takes a hard look at how women’s stories and perspectives are too often excluded from our historical narratives. Set in August 1882, Sally’s three eldest sons are captured by the Hatfield clan. Sally defies her womanly place in the home and crosses miles of Appalachian wilderness in the dark of night to save her children from certain death at the vengeful hands of the Hatfields. After traveling all those miles alone, she arrives at the home of the Hatfield patriarch, “Devil” Anse Hatfield, and refuses to let anything stand in her way until she has seen the “Devil” face to face.

The would-be elf is raised, unaware that he is actually a human, until his enormous size and poor toy-making abilities force him to face the truth. With Santa’s permission, Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to find his birth father, and discover his true identity. Faced with the harsh realities that his father is on the naughty list and his half-brother doesn’t even believe in Santa, Buddy is determined to win over his new family and help remember the true meaning of Christmas. By David Sedaris Recommended for mature audience due to language and subject matter This outrageous holiday comedy stars Crumpet, a rebel without a Claus, who recounts his true-life tale of being an out-of-work writer doing a stint as a Macy’s department store elf. His encounters, as an Elf during the season of forced joy, have become a delightful cult classic for those in need of a holly-jolly antidote! A delightfully absurd look at the commercial Christmas season, Sedaris’ sharp and hilarious observations have rapidly become one of the nation’s most popular holiday shows. Barter’s production will feature one of Barter’s favorite actors, Nick Piper, as Crumpet. In Repertory with Wooden Snowflakes

Tuesdays are open mic night at Wolf Hills Brewing Co.  Sip one of the four year-round beers on tap or try the rotating six to ten other taps while listening to live music acts.  The brewery takes its name from the original appellation that Daniel Boone gave to the wilderness that became Abingdon. Tradition holds that Boone and his hunting companion spent a sleepless night along a hill on the Great Road after their dogs encountered a pack of wolves, which had a den in a nearby cave.  Drawing from this rich history, Wolf Hills Brewing Co. melds together time honored brewing methods using only the highest quality ingredients with modern beer styles.  The result is a level of fresh, savory beer that is unmatched in this region. Discover one of our many styles for yourself . . . you’ll be howling for more.
