Touching the Sacred Opening Reception: April 5, 2018 from 6 – 8 p.m. March 30 – September 16, 2018 Special Lecture: Tours at Two - Guided Tour of Touching the Sacred with Mary Haviland April 8 beginning at 2 p.m. Inspired by faith, the holy imagery has long been a part of many religions. These gloriously creative representations of the stories and holy beings began as a teaching device for the believers, many of whom were unable to read. Touching the Sacred focuses on imagery from two branches of Christianity – the Orthodox and the Catholic traditions and how the depictions developed by each are similar and how they differ. These depictions range from paintings of saints, angels, and the Holy Family on canvas, wood, bronze, and tin panels, to carvings of them completely in wood or with modeled heads and hands and cloth bodies which were sumptuously clothed. Over the centuries, these venerated representations of holiness have evolved from teaching tools into a sacred art form.

Living History: Life in the Backcountry and the Battle of Kings Mountain

    Sunday, August 26, 2018
    Show details

    Locality:
    Washington
    1780 Muster Place
    Abingdon, VA 24210

Hear ye!  Hear ye!  Overmountain Men and their families will come to life at the Abingdon Muster Grounds.   This event will highlight the importance of the Washington County, Virginia militia and the Revolutionary War Battle of Kings Mountain, 1780.  There will be demonstrations related to life in backcountry Virginia during colonial times.  This event has activities for the whole family!  Certified by the National Park Service as the northern trailhead of the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail, the Abingdon Muster Grounds is a picturesque 9-acre park with significant history.  When a call was issued for militia to respond to British Major Patrick Ferguson’s threat that, “he would march his army over the mountains, hang their leaders, and lay their country waste with fire and sword,” men from all over the region moved into action.  After a two week campaign, the Overmountain Men fought the Battle of Kings Mountain with overwhelming success.  Thomas Jefferson said it was “the turn of the tide of success which terminated the Revolutionary War, with the seal of our independence”.  The Keller Interpretive Center houses southwest Virginia’s premier Revolutionary War exhibits.  Artifacts associated with backcountry Virginia and the Battle of Kings Mountain are on display.

    Barter Theatre presents "Sally McCoy"

    Show details

    Locality:
    Washington
    110 West Main Street
    Abingdon, VA 24210

By Alice Stanley In the midst of the first gruesomely violent event of the legendary Hatfield and McCoy feud, one woman does what she must to save her family. Sally McCoy tells a harrowing and deeply personal story which takes a hard look at how women’s stories and perspectives are too often excluded from our historical narratives. Set in August 1882, Sally’s three eldest sons are captured by the Hatfield clan. Sally defies her womanly place in the home and crosses miles of Appalachian wilderness in the dark of night to save her children from certain death at the vengeful hands of the Hatfields. After traveling all those miles alone, she arrives at the home of the Hatfield patriarch, “Devil” Anse Hatfield, and refuses to let anything stand in her way until she has seen the “Devil” face to face.

    Saturday, November 10, 2018
    Show details

    Locality:
    Washington
    300 Stanley St
    Abingdon, VA 24210

Open to the public! See FB page for more info and to sign up! Flint Mill Hike - 3 miles (Very Hard) If you enjoy the scenery of South Holston Lake you really should experience it from above! Even though this hike doesn't technically take place in SWVA, it is very close and it does overlook parts of SWVA. If you have it in you, we strongly recommend going on this hike. 9:00am - We will meet by the large recycling bins in the Harry L. Coomes Center parking lot. Please arrive early to check in and get directions if needed. 9:15am - From the Coomes Center we will caravan out to the Flint Mill Trail. We should arrive at the Flint Mill trailhead at 10:00am or shortly after. There are no restrooms at by the trailhead just fyi. Hike - Even though the hike is only about 1.5 miles up and 1.5 miles back, the 1.5 miles up is pretty much straight up for about 1.25 of that (covering about 1200ft in elevation). Many people refer to it more as a climb than a hike.

With Santa’s permission, Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to find his birth father, and discover his true identity. Faced with the harsh realities that his father is on the naughty list and his half-brother doesn’t even believe in Santa, Buddy is determined to win over his new family and help remember the true meaning of Christmas. By David Sedaris Recommended for mature audience due to language and subject matter This outrageous holiday comedy stars Crumpet, a rebel without a Claus, who recounts his true-life tale of being an out-of-work writer doing a stint as a Macy’s department store elf. His encounters, as an Elf during the season of forced joy, have become a delightful cult classic for those in need of a holly-jolly antidote! A delightfully absurd look at the commercial Christmas season, Sedaris’ sharp and hilarious observations have rapidly become one of the nation’s most popular holiday shows. Barter’s production will feature one of Barter’s favorite actors, Nick Piper, as Crumpet. In Repertory with Wooden Snowflakes

Tuesdays are open mic night at Wolf Hills Brewing Co.  Sip one of the four year-round beers on tap or try the rotating six to ten other taps while listening to live music acts.  The brewery takes its name from the original appellation that Daniel Boone gave to the wilderness that became Abingdon. Tradition holds that Boone and his hunting companion spent a sleepless night along a hill on the Great Road after their dogs encountered a pack of wolves, which had a den in a nearby cave.  Drawing from this rich history, Wolf Hills Brewing Co. melds together time honored brewing methods using only the highest quality ingredients with modern beer styles.  The result is a level of fresh, savory beer that is unmatched in this region. Discover one of our many styles for yourself . . . you’ll be howling for more.
